VICE PRESIDENT, GREENHOUSE OPERATIONS

The Sunterra Group of Companies is a dynamic organization that comprises pig production, cropping and greenhouse operations (Sunterra Farms), pork processing (Sunterra Meats), retail locations (Sunterra Market) and an Italian cooked and cured meats production facility (Soleterra d’Italia).

 

To support Sunterra’s objectives for growth, innovation and the production of superior quality greenhouse fruits, we are seeking an experienced Vice President of Greenhouse Operations with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, along with superior analytical and problem-solving skills, to effectively drive and deliver outcomes for the organization and further develop a culture that promotes the vision and values of Sunterra. Reporting to the President of the Sunterra Group, this exciting opportunity will be an excellent fit for an individual looking to work in a fast-paced, innovative, and forward-thinking environment within the agri-food sector and will allow an effective and passionate person to shape this role to their strengths.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Working collaboratively with other members of the senior management team, the successful candidate will lead and be responsible for all greenhouse operations, including but not limited to the following activities:

 

  • Lead and oversee the planning of greenhouse expansion and construction, including liaising with various levels of government, educational institutions and other stakeholders

  • Drive business development in collaboration with senior management, identifying and pursuing emerging markets and market shifts

  • Lead a team of 3-4 managers and project personnel, coordinating activities and ensuring that plans progress efficiently

  • Proactively seek new opportunities and overcome challenges to enhance results or minimize problems

  • Monitor and be accountable for financial performance of the planning and construction phase, and later, production and labour costs and the operational results

  • Implement and drive efficiency measures to achieve maximum production, while maintaining quality and safety

  • Gather and interpret operational data required for decision making and budget preparation

  • Develop, refine and maintain operational policies with the goal of creating a consistent and safe working environment

  • Set clear objectives using rigorous logic and methodologies

  • Create, implement, and assess tools for measuring Key Performance Indicators

  • Plan and execute training programs, in collaboration with HR Manager

 


Knowledge, Skills and Experience Requirements:

  • Three to five years’ experience in leadership or senior management positions

  • Excellent analytical skills; proven success record of strategic planning and change management  

  • Experience in agriculture production, food processing or manufacturing management is an asset

  • Post-secondary education in a related field is an asset

  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills, using a variety of software applications and online tools

  • Knowledge and experience with large-scale commercial plant cultivation including nutrient requirements, growing media, light requirements, temperature control, humidity, and harvesting is an asset

  • Familiarity with health and safety standards

  • Understanding of and ability to set KPIs

  • Excellence in achieving multiple priorities and meeting deadlines in a timely fashion
